Spring is in the Air

The temperatures are slowly climbing and with spring in the air, many of us are planning to venture out of hibernation and become active again!  Consider starting the season off right by eating a handful of California walnuts a day, not only for heart health, but for bone health too!

A new study published in Nutrition Journal suggests that walnuts are beneficial to the skeletal system by decreasing the breakdown of bone. A higher consumption of alpha linolenic-acid (an essential omega-3 fatty acid found in walnuts) leads to a reduction in bone turnover, and a shift in the balance of bone degradation toward formation.  Building bone strength, especially after the age of 50, is one of the most important ways of preventing osteoporosis.

Walnuts are unique as they are one of the most nutrient-dense whole food sources of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).  Numerous studies have already suggested that omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation, heart and vascular disease risk, decrease insulin resistance, assist with weight management and may be beneficial in brain function.

Remember to start the spring season off right and take care of yourself by taking care of your health. Plump and crunchy with a rich, nutty flavour, California walnuts add texture and taste to a wide variety of dishes, from salads to desserts.
